The JAB campaign for mass vaccination against bluetongue can step up a gear after Intervet announced its vaccine has been licensed for use in the UK. The news comes as Defra published its roll out plan and guidance notes for livestock keepers and vets. Bluetongue is an infectious, noncontagious arthropodborne viral disease primarily of domestic and wild ruminants. Infection with bluetongue virus is common worldwide but is usually subclinical or mild in most infected ruminants. Bluetongue is almost exclusively a disease of sheep, particularly the fine-wool and mutton breeds, although white-tailed deer ( Odocoileus virginianus ), and pronghorn ( Antilocapra americana ) and desert bighorn sheep ( Ovis canadensis ) may develop severe clinical disease in North America. Defra’s vaccination roll out plan for the England, which has been developed by the core group which includes industry representatives, is another important development. JAB said "While the ultimate roll out plan has to remain flexible enough to accommodate any developments with the virus, it gives a clear indication to farmers of the current thinking of how the vaccine will be delivered and it should allow them to start planning for vaccination." |

An unstable and changing climate has the potential to affect human health in a number of ways. There will be risks of more deaths from climate-sensitive diseases such as diarrhoea and malaria. There may be devastating indirect impacts on food crops and the availability of fresh water. The poor will be the first and the hardest hit. This year's World Health Day, on 7 April, therefore focuses on the need to protect human health from climate change. |

Whilst consumption of meat, eggs and milk can be a useful source of protein in the diet, particularly for those with low nutritional status, high levels of consumption can have adverse effects on human health. The 20th century change from more plant-based diets to energy-dense diets, high in fat and animal foods, has played a key role in the upsurge in diet-related, preventable health problems and diseases, from obesity to type 2 diabetes, many types of heart disease and some cancers. Rates of these diseases are now growing rapidly in the developing world as western-style diets become more common. Any rounded study of the impact of livestock farming on human health must also take into account the role of zoonoses (diseases which originate in animals). The OIE says 60% of human pathogens and 75% of recent emerging diseases are zoonotic. |

In September 2006, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) under its Gender Support Programme partnered with Nestle Pakistan Ltd and Engro Foods to join hands for the implementation of a project for Lady Livestock workers in the Punjab Province of Pakistan. The project aims to train 5000 lady livestock workers (LLW's) for which UNDP under its Gender Support Programme is funding 5 Million US$. The offer was made by UNDP themselves, primarily because of the Nestle's credibility and also the Nestle's engagement with the communities in the milk collection areas. The overall programme has two components in terms of province wise implementation i.e ; a) Punjab province project component with Nestle , for US$ 3.9 Million and ; b) Sindh Province project component with Engro Foods , for US$ 1.1 Million. In the overall project Nestle Pakistan is also bridging in substantial level of technical expertise and related resources. |
